Question

Question for anyone! Has any one had a child with open heart surgery in the summer time? Is it hard for them not to scratch the wound and do they hurt when the sweat gets in to the healing wound. How did you keep it dry while it was healing. Because the cardiologist told me the last time that he would have his surgery in May or June. This is before they told me to come sooner to see them.

  1. Hey Connie! Logan had his Rastelli surgery when he was ten months old in the beginning of September and it was still hot out. The best thing to do is to keep them dressed in cotton onezies following surgery. That way their little hands can't find their way underneath their shirt to scratch at the incision. Logan never really scratched at his during his first two surgeries. The last one at the age of three he did pick at it.

I don't think the sweat really makes a difference since Logan has sweated while in the hospital following surgery. The main thing is keep the site clean and dry.
